A study by British Journal of Sports Medicine found outdoor-walking-group participants saw significant improvements in blood pressure, resting heart rate, body fat, lung function and mood.
It’s not just physical benefits there are significant psychological advantages too. The conversation and social bonds that result from group walking are especially important in this day and age. Daytime SE Fitness walking groups nearly always finish at Costa – it’s an important part of the overall session!
For many of us the most difficult part of exercise is consistency and one of the key benefits of group walking (or running) is that it can help you to feel committed while at the same time making the experience more enjoyable. It’s easy to go for a walk on your own on a lovely summer day – not quite so easy when it’s cold and wet!
There are a couple of practical benefits of walking with a group too: you’re likely to go at a quicker pace which is better for your heart and you don’t have to worry about finding a route or losing your way!
Group walking really is one of the best exercises you can do – a time honoured way of getting out, enjoying the fresh air and interacting with others.
Everyone is welcome at an SE Fitness Walking Group. We have sessions in the morning or evenings for after work. See www.sefitness.com for details.
