I caught up with Tash Brewer over the festive season and was impressed to hear she had lost almost one stone over the previous five weeks.
SE: I am particularly impressed Tash because I imagine it must be very hard to focus on losing weight knowing the festive season is looming. How did you do it?
TB: I joined a diet group and followed their plan.
SE: How was this different to your normal diet?
TB: I have altered my portion sizes.
SE: Have you made any other changes?
TB: Yes, we are encouraged to do some exercise every day. In fact we have a form to fill out which has tick boxes. Some days when I don’t feel like doing any exercise I remember the tick box and this inspires me to go for a walk or do some sit ups before going to bed.
SE: That sounds a good way of keeping motivated especially if you know other family members or friends will see this form. I think it is very brave to start a new eating programme so close to Christmas. Has this caused any problems?
TB: Yes, I have really missed the support I get from the group over Christmas. Basically I have now gone off track.
SE: You know, this is quite normal. When we try to make a change to our behaviour we follow a cycle which often includes a ‘lapsed’ period. You shouldn’t see this as a failure. The important thing is to focus on getting back on track. How do you think you could do this?
TB: Well, I am going on holiday but as soon as I get back I will sign back in with my group.
