As part of our series celebrating SE Fitness Volunteers for #VolunteerWeek it’s time to take a closer look at the daytime Leading Legend that is Neil Insley!
Neil started running with SE Fitness in September 2012 after he retired from work and when he had finished volunteering at the London Olympics. Neil’s played sport his whole life including rugby for Sutton RFC but in more recent years had only run on the treadmill so cross country running was new. Neil isn’t just a leader he’s also our primary go-to handy man for stuff that needs doing in SE Fitness HQ. We all have reason to be very grateful to Neil!
Here’s what Neil had to say about being an SE Fitness Leader:
How long have you been a Leader?
I became a Leader in 2013 after running with SE Fitness for about one year. Sally asked me if I’d like to volunteer because I knew the routes and was happy to take responsibility for looking after people. It was similar to the volunteering I took on at London 2012 where I was a Games Maker Team Leader. I had a team of different people every day at Wimbledon. Leading runners seemed the next natural step.
What do you enjoy most about Leading?
I very much enjoy the organising before and after the run as well as leading and encouraging runners. I get a ‘kick’ out of helping people to improve an get better. It is good to get to know the runners in your group and look at how you can help them improve with support and encouragement.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming a Leader?
It’s not difficult and you get a good deal out of it. Have confidence, be positive and get to know your group so you can help and encourage and know when they need support.
It is part of our human nature to feel good after helping someone out. Volunteering can help you gain new skills and boost your confidence. At SE Fitness we always need volunteers but you don’t have to commit to every week! At this time of year someone who can occasionally help out to cover holidays is just as important. If you think you might like to be part of the SE Fitness Team of fabulous volunteers please have a chat to me or your Leader. We’d love to have you along!
