Yesterday, I published our half marathon training plan which starts on Saturday 27th August with 6 miles and builds up to a couple of weeks of 10 mile plus runs by end September / early October.
If you haven’t signed up for anything yet, there is no Birmingham Half this year so no obvious local contender. I’m sharing various events that our runners are doing, in the hope that one will inspire you.
These events are all on different dates so you may need to take the plan I published and adapt it for your own needs. You are still welcome to join our training and ‘add some on’ or ‘cut some off’ to make it work for you. Even as a person who enjoys a lone run, I find that running with others is extremely helpful when doing longer distances.
Local Event
The most obvious local event is Lichfield Half Marathon on 18th September. I love Lichfield as a route but not tempted this year as I’m away in August and don’t want to be doing long runs on holiday!
Further afield
Further, but not too far, some of our runners are doing Tissington Trail Half marathon, 24 Sept, which runs down the cycle route. The advantage of this one way half marathon is that it is downhill! It is sold out but maybe one to consider next year.
Shrewsbury Half marathon is on a good date, 9 October, looks a tempting route and is also comfortably doable from home.

City Events
9 October is a popular date for half marathons this year. It is the date of Royal Parks Half (London), Manchester Half and Bournemouth. It is also the date for Palma half marathon in Majorca should anyone fancy that again?!
Cardiff Half Marathon is on 2nd October and has a great reputation. The Cardiff Half is one of the Super Halfs series – the others include Prague, Copenhagen, Valencia and Lisbon so an exciting prospect in all.

Countryside Events
If you prefer trails and country side to crowds and cities then a group from SE Fitness are off to do Lake Vyrnwy half marathon on 18th September. This is a spectacular (and mostly flat) route around the reservoir in Wales. Finally, you could join me in the Lake District for a 15K (so shorter than a half marathon) on the Lakeland Trails on 15th October.
