The beginning
I started running in 2010 after getting fed up of never making it to the gym after work. It was another year before I joined SE, a decision I have never regretted.
Where you are now?
I run of an evening with Run Plus. There’s nothing better after a busy day at work. Although I love the park I do prefer road running, probably because I know the road routes better.
Recovering from Injury
Last April I fell the day before the London Marathon on my last training run. My foot hurt and was slightly swollen but, as I’d done the training I decided I would try and run the marathon despite the swelling and discomfort! 9miles in to the run I couldn’t stand the pain anymore so, I stopped. Thankfully my lovely friend Sharon Moore was there to rescue me and make sure I got back to the finish line to meet the rest of my family and friends who had come to London to support me. It wasn’t until the Monday (2days after falling) that I went to hospital and had an x-ray which confirmed 2 breaks in a bone in my foot. Enforced rest ensued for 7weeks but, unfortunately attempts to return to running following couch to 5k programme highlighted that all was not right with my foot! A trip to the works physio were the news wasn’t what I wanted to hear but, what I expected! No running! With no indication of if or when I would be able to return to running due to nerve damage and an ankle that didn’t want to move the way it should do. Thankfully by following the physio instructions/exercises strictly and adding in a podiatrist (who knew they did more than insoles!) I was given the green light to start a return to run rehab programme. Again I followed this strictly never under or over doing it. Thankfully due diligence and patience paid off and I started my marathon training for London 2019. Which I completed whoop whoop.
For any of you on the injury bench my advice would be, go and see someone about it rather than google your symptoms or phone a friend. Unless of course your friend is a physio. Allow yourself the time to recover, reset your goals and remember if you keep saying ‘I’m always injured’ it possibly means you haven’t given yourself enough time to recover.
Future
Today I’m hoping to run Manchester half which all being well I will finish, in 2hrs, the main goal being – to finish.
What’s your absolute favourite event?
Liverpool RocknRoll weekend.
Tips to Share
It’s human nature to compare yourself to others which is ok what’s not ok is to beat yourself up that you’re not as fast as them. My advice is to be the best you can be.
