With more people than ever getting into the exercise habit, as fitness professionals, we do need to look at the best ways to give our support. Wearing the right kit may have a big influence as to whether they keep up the exercise. Just as advising on the importance of good foot wear we should also be mindful of the sports bra for our female exercisers.
Women who experience much breast movement during exercise may be embarrassed, feel uncomfortable and self- conscious, making it a very negative experience. Those who wear a sports bra are able to enjoy their exercise without distraction.
The breasts do not contain muscle as some may believe; they are made up of fine Cooper’s ligaments which will stretch. The average 36C breast weighs 300grams and without a sports bra during exercise there will be a good deal of pressure on this delicate support structure. Once over stretched they will not return to their normal length.
Tests have shown that during exercise the breasts will move between 4cm and 14cms! This movement can be reduced by 78% whilst wearing a sports specialist bra as opposed to 38% with a normal bra.
Sports bras offer protection for the key pressure points; they are designed to offer added comfort and support for women whilst exercising. Being made of breathable fabrics they allow air to circulate between and under the breast minimising discomfort and rubbing.
There are different sports bras for different sports. For low level impact such as yoga and walking a compression bra gives support whilst pressing the breast against the chest.
For high impact sports such as running, circuit training etc. the encapsulation bra supports each breast individually. There are also bras which offer a combination of the above which are suitable for all types of exercise.
It is recommended that you have your bras professionally fitted as breast shape and size can change.
