On the weekend of June 16th/17th 2012 Sutton Park will yet again be host to the largest ‘women – only’ fundraising event in the UK. The Race for Life, which started in 1994, inspires women of all ages and fitness levels to raise funds for Cancer Research UK by walking or running 5km. I remember taking part in the first ever event held in Sutton Park with around 240 other like minded women. Even back then it was an amazing atmosphere with so many women coming together to fight a common cause. Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer so it is difficult not to be affected by it in one way or another. How the event has grown?! In Sutton Coldfield it has become so popular that they now have to hold it over 2 days. Through out the year there are another 240 such events and since it’s beginning, 6 million participants across the UK have raised over £457 million!
I wonder what you will be doing on this weekend in June? What a great way to raise much needed funds and take up a fitness challenge. This could not only benefit the health of those suffering from cancer but also your own. 5km (just over 3 miles) is a great distance for beginner runners and walkers to aim for. Prepare yourself by following a training programme for 6 – 8 weeks before the event, this means starting fairly soon! Commit with a friend or family member; making the journey with someone else not only makes it easier but more fun too.
Why not join the fight against cancer and enter the Race For Life?
