The London 2012 education programme Get Set which was launched in 2007 has attracted 80% of UK schools. The programme has been teaching young people to live the Olympic and Paralympic values.
London 2012 has also reached out worldwide having an impact on the life’s of millions of young people through the International Inspiration programme. We hear how over 250,000 children in Bangladesh, a country often affected by flooding, have learnt survival swimming. There has been up to an 80% increase in PE teachers in Brazil.
Has your child been inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics? In the UK there are around 17 percent of teenagers classed as either overweight or obese, almost 75% of our young people are still not getting the recommended one hour of daily activity outside of school. We want our children to be inspired but then what? The danger is back to school and back into old habits of television and computer games. Research has shown that active parents are more likely to have active children. Also, if you have been active as a child you are more likely to be active in later life. Surely, we have a responsibility to encourage our teenagers to take part in sport or some form of physical activity. We have a great opportunity now – suddenly sport is being seen as cool, it’s popular and attractive, it’s easier to find a friend to go along to the gym with. Inspire your teenager to find out about new opportunities to take up a new sport.
