As cooler weather approaches I wanted to remind you all of the importance of warming up before going out for a run or brisk walk. Leaders are warming up for their benefit and for yours so please follow their instructions and join in.
Help prevent injury. The gentle warm up exercises and the dynamic stretches are there to bring up your heart rate, increase blood flow and loosen muscles. Setting off in the cold with tight legs is a recipe for disaster.
Finding your pace. If you set off cold on a cold day then you are much more likely to set off too fast. If your legs survive this rude awakening the risk is that you end up slowing down as the run progresses which can leave you feeling exhausted and disheartened.
Into the zone! One of the most important factors of warm up is to prepare yourself mentally for the challenge ahead. Please don’t just chat all through the warm up! Give yourself chance to be ‘in the moment’. We have had a few falls recently. Running and walking in the winter months requires a degree of concentration so use the warm up as a chance to find your focus and get yourself into the zone.
Keep well this Winter SE Fitness!
